Prof. Lippert

Prof. Bernhard Lippert has received his Ph.D. degree from TU Munich in 1974. After a postdoctoral stay at Michigan State University (1974-1976) with Barnett Rosenberg, the discoverer of Cisplatin, he returned to Munich to complete a habilitation degree in 1982. Following an Associate Professorship at the University of Freiburg (1985-1988) he accepted a call for the first chair of Bioinorganic Chemistry in Germany at the University of Dortmund in 1988. He retired from this position in 2011.

cis-Pt(NH3)2Cl2 (Cisplatin) is presently one of the most widely applied drugs in cancer chemotherapy. It is generally assumed that its mode of action involves binding to DNA. This has triggered a worldwide interest in the fundamental chemistry of this drug and in particular in its reactivity patterns with the constituents of DNA, the nucleobases. Our research of almost 4 decades has focused on basic questions regarding the coordination chemistry of Cisplatin, and likewise of its less active (“inactive”) trans isomer, in particular with regard to binding patterns toward the heterocyclic nucleobases. We feel that many of our findings are of relevance also to other heavy metal ions and their biological chemistry related to base mispairing and mutagenicity, among others.

The lecture will start out with a brief overview on the current status of Pt antitumor drugs, and will then focus on selected examples of coordination complexes of Pt with model nucleobases, which has eventually also led to a merging of this chemistry with Supramolecular Coordination Chemistry.
